If your 2,000 square foot home has a 275-gallon heating oil tank (which can be safely filled with 230 gallons of fuel at a time) this tank and amount of fuel will usually last a homeowner about five weeks.
However, these are all estimates. Your heating oil use can easily fluctuate and is impacted by multiple factors including:
- How old your home heating system is
- Whether or not your home is well insulated
- If there are drafts in your home’s doors or windows
- What temperature you like to set your thermostat to
- How low outside temperatures drop and how long winter lasts
- The condition of your heating equipment and how well it has been maintained over the years
How to conserve your heating oil
If you are actively trying to cut down on how much heating oil you use and want to conserve fuel, you can do so by:
- Scheduling professional maintenance for your heating equipment
- Adding caulking, weather sealing and door sweeps to trap heat and keep it inside
- Installing a programmable thermostat, which lets you adjust and control the temperature of your home even when you’re not at home
- Opening your home’s windows and blinds during the day and using the natural sunlight as an extra heat source
