- Your propane cylinders should always be kept a safe distance away from any potential sources of ignition.
- Always store tanks outside in a well-ventilated area that is out of direct sunlight. You do not want your tanks stored in a garage, shed or other enclosed space.
- Tanks should be upright at all times to help prevent leaks. They should also always be on a level surface.
- It is best to keep cylinders off the ground. Alternatively, place them on a non-flammable board.
- If and when you need to transport a grill tank, make sure the valve is both closed and plugged before you start moving it. The very best place for a grill tank in a vehicle is a truck bed. However, if your vehicle doesn’t have one you can put the tank in your car as long as you leave the windows down so that there is ventilation.
When you have more than one grill tank in your designated storage area it is helpful (and not particularly complicated) to organize them.
Labeling each one with their purchase or refill date will help you keep track of when they need to be replaced. We also recommend rotating their use so that none of them go too long without being put in your grill and used.
Know when it’s time to install a new propane cylinder

- Seeing if your grill has a scale in its storage compartment and giving it a read
- Installing a tank gauge to your grill to track fuel levels
- Weighing the grill tank and subtracting the tank’s tare weight (TW) from that number. You will then need to divide that number by your cylinder’s water capacity (WC) to figure out the percentage of fuel that is still in your grill tank.
- Pouring hot water over your cylinder and running your hand over it. A cool spot indicates where your propane level currently is.
