What is now Elizabeth was founded by English settlers in 1664. It was originally called Elizabethtown and was part of the Elizabethtown Settlement, named for the wife of Sir George Carteret, one of the original proprietors of the colony of New Jersey.

Because Elizabeth was the capital of New Jersey at the time of the American Revolution, it was the site of almost nonstop attacks by the British.

The Industrial Revolution came to Elizabeth and brought a wide range of businesses, including the Singer sewing machine company. Elizabeth was more than 100 years ahead of the times, as the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company built a factory there in 1895.
