How to Install A Propane Tank To A Grill

There are many benefits and advantages to grilling with propane. One of them is how easy, simple and quick it is to install a new propane cylinder to your grill. Just how easy is it, you ask? Let’s take a look!

Installing a new propane cylinder

If you suddenly find that your grill’s propane cylinder (which is sometimes also called a grill tank) is empty, there is no need to panic. You can replace it by following these easy steps:

1. Put your new cylinder into your grill’s storage compartment.
2. If your grill has a restraining bolt, make sure you tighten it.
3. Install the pressure regulator to the valve on your cylinder and tighten it.
4. Do an inspection for leaks. You can do this by spraying the cylinder’s valve and the grill’s regulator with soapy water.
5. Once you have sprayed, open the valve to see if there are bubbles inside. If there are, you may have a leak or a loose connection. In this case, close the valve, make sure all the connections are tight and open the valve again. If you still notice bubbles after performing this additional test, you might have to replace the hose or grill tank.

When to install a new propane grill tank

Now that you know how to install a new propane cylinder for your grill let’s look at how to determine if your cylinder is empty, which will indicate that it is time to put on a new one.

• Some grills have a scale in their storage compartment that tells you how much fuel is left in the cylinder.
• Buy a tank gauge from a hardware store and attach it to the grill tank.
• Weigh the grill tank and subtract your tank’s tare weight (TW) from that number. Then divide that number by your cylinder’s water capacity (WC) to figure out the percentage of fuel that is still in your tank.
• Pour hot water over your grill tank and run your hand over it. A cool spot will indicate where your propane level is.
