Troubleshooting Simple Problems With Your Home Cooling System

Summer heat is arriving early – time to fire up your home cooling system. But what if your air conditioner isn’t up to the task?

Don’t worry – Rucci technicians are here for you all day, every day.

But before you contact us for service, it’s worthwhile to do a little troubleshooting first: sometimes the problem is an easy fix that you can handle yourself without having to pay for a home repair visit. Here are a few things to check:

If your home cooling system won’t turn on at all:

  1. Make sure your thermostat is set properly…meaning that it is:
    • In “air conditioning”, “cool,” or “fan” mode
    • Set for at least 5 degrees cooler than the current room temperature

If your thermostat has a digital display and you no longer see a readout, it probably needs batteries.

  2. Make sure your air conditioner hasn’t tripped a circuit breaker.
    • A circuit breaker shuts off (“trips”) to prevent an overload of current in the circuit, which could cause a fire. This can easily happen when your A/C is running full tilt. Reset the breaker and try the system again (and make sure your circuit breaker is labeled for future reference!).
  3. Make sure all power switches are turned on.
    • Look for any switches that might affect your A/C’s outdoor or indoor components and make sure they’re in the on position.

If none of the above actions work, it’s time to call for service.

If your home cooling system turns on but will not blow cool air:

  1. Make sure your thermostat is properly set (see above).
  2. Make sure all vents are open and are not blocked by furniture.
  3. Check the outdoor unit (the condenser) to see if it’s running. If it isn’t:
    • Check the power switch (see above).
    • Check the condenser’s circuit breaker (see above).
    • Check for debris inside the condenser (TURN OFF THE POWER FROM THE CIRCUIT BREAKER FIRST!).
  4. Check the indoor unit.
  1. Check power switches.
  2. Clean or replace clogged air filters and try again.

If none of these actions work, contact Rucci for service.
