An explanation of galvanized plumbing

Up until the mid 1980’s, most homes and houses were built with lead pipes. Around 1986, it was determined that this type of plumbing was no longer safe as part of the Safe Water Drinking Act.

Even prior to lead pipes being labeled as unsafe, plumbers were using galvanized pipes as a healthier alternative to lead pipes. Galvanized pipes are made of steel and a zinc coating, which was intended to protect the plumbing within a home from corrosion and rust. It was very common to find this type of plumbing in homes prior to about 1980.

However, houses are no longer built with galvanized plumbing (just like they are no longer built with lead pipes). This is because they can cause damage to a home’s water supply, which can lead to health issues.
